The Queen

On Monday night, I FINALLY saw The Queen. I love when the Oscar nominations are about to come out and someone seems like a sure thing and movie theaters bring back a film that hasn't been playing for a little while. I love it! Thanks, Quality 16!
The Queen was really, really good. I think it's the 2006 version of 2005's Capote - a strong film with a strong central character and good supporting cast but with a standout lead actor. Helen Mirren is just as fantastic as you've heard she is. There is no way she won't win an Oscar. Michael Sheen, who plays Tony Blair, is also superb - I'm a little sad that he didn't get a Best Supporting Actor nom. And James Cromwell is pretty funny as Prince Philip, the Queen's husband, bringing some levity to what could have been cut-and-dry British political piece. I think the actor who played Prince Charles was horribly miscast, because he's tons better looking than the real prince.
As wonderful as Helen Mirren is, this film really belongs to the unsung heroes, the ones who aren't getting the press but contribute so heavily to the film's brilliance. I'm talking about the Welsh Corgis. Apparently, Queen Elizabeth runs around with a herd of Welsh Corgis - and they are completely adorable. I want one real bad. Bravo, Welsh Corgis - you have won the Oscar of my heart.

Welsh Corgis - A

If you get a corgi and don't train it *very* well I will disown you as a spring break buddy. A girl in my high school had two of them and left them outside all the time. It took us several aborted prank attempts before we realized that they simply barked ALL DAY LONG.

You're not alone in wanting the Corgi. Teppei is totally obsessed. There a lady in our neighborhood that walks one, and he just melts when he sees it. If we ever do get a dog, it will definitely be a Corgi.
